If you are gearing up for a business or pleasure trip to the USA, you will definitely need to apply for the ESTA application. ESTA, also known as Electronic System for Travel Authorization is an automated application procedure initiated by the US Government for simplifying the prescreening process of prospective visitors prior to boarding a US-bound flight or cruise ship. Thus, if you are visiting the USA under the Visa Waiver Program, you must obtain an approved ESTA in advance. Since ESTA approval may take a bit longer, you are advised to apply for the same at least 72 hours prior to departure.

ESTA is a simplified form of a conventional visa that exists in digital format. It allows you to acquire travel authorization to the USA so that you can enter the American territory legally. An authorized ESTA is valid for multiple trips in the USA for up to two years from the date of issue or until your passport expires (whichever is sooner).

1.) Valid Passport:

Make sure you hold a valid passport from a VWP (Visa Waiver Program) country. If your passport is expiring soon, then do not delay; touch base with your regional passport office to accelerate the passport renewal procedure.

2.) Biometric Passport:

Make sure you hold a biometric passport as an old version of passport is not eligible.

3.) Fill-out Application:

Visit an ESTA website and fill out the application form without the slightest error.

4.) Be Honest:

Make sure you provide honest and genuine answers to all questions. You will be asked eligibility question pertaining to your background such as employment status, the name of the organization you are working for, criminal records, the purpose of traveling to the USA, city of embarkation, along with information relating to your identification details.

5.) Review Your Answers:

Fifthly, once you are done with providing all the information in the questionnaire, review the details entered by you for accuracy as it is not possible to update information pertaining to your passport or eligibility questions once you submit the ESTA application.

6.) Payment:

Pay the registration fees by debit or credit card. The US government charges US$14 from all ESTA applicants. If you do not hold a debit or credit card, you may use a third-party’s debit or credit card to make the payment.

Soon after verifying your application, the American authorities will send “Authorization Approved” notification to you within 72 hours. Your ESTA application procedure ends here. The CBP authorities will be updated electronically about your travel authorization as soon as you embark on your American trip.

Last but not least, make sure you provide a valid email address in your ESTA application, as your application number and the link to obtain your ESTA application status will be sent to the email id. If your ESTA application does not get an approval within 72 hours, have patience, and then reapply after 24 hours.
